What is Canada Express Entry?
Launched in 2015, Canada Express Entry is an online system used by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to manage applications for permanent residency under three main federal economic immigration programs:
- Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW)
- Federal Skilled Trades Program (FST)
- Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
Express Entry is designed to process applications quickly and efficiently, with most applications processed in six months or less.
How Does the Express Entry System Work?
The Express Entry process is broken down into several key stages:
1. Determine Eligibility
Before entering the Express Entry pool, candidates must determine if they meet the eligibility requirements for one of the three programs. This typically involves having a certain level of work experience, language proficiency, and education. If you meet the requirements, you can create a profile and submit it to the Express Entry pool.
2. Create an Online Profile
Once eligible, you create an online profile in the Express Entry system. This profile includes key details about your qualifications, work experience, language skills, and education. You will also need to take an approved language test (IELTS for English or TEF for French) and get an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) to confirm that your foreign education is equivalent to Canadian standards.
3. Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) Score
After creating your profile, you will receive a CRS score based on various factors, including:
- Age
- Education
- Work experience
- Language proficiency
- Adaptability (e.g., having a job offer or family in Canada)
The higher your CRS score, the better your chances of being invited to apply (ITA) for permanent residency.
4. Invitation to Apply (ITA)
Candidates with the highest CRS scores are invited to apply for permanent residency during regular Express Entry draws. Invitations are issued approximately every two weeks, and only candidates with high CRS scores are selected. If you receive an ITA, you will have 60 days to submit your complete application, including all supporting documents.
5. Permanent Residency Application
Once you submit your application, it will be processed by IRCC. If approved, you will be granted permanent residency in Canada and receive a Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR). After arrival in Canada, you will become a permanent resident and can enjoy the many benefits of living in this diverse and beautiful country.
Eligibility Requirements for Canada Express Entry
To be eligible for Express Entry, you must meet the minimum criteria for one of the three programs:
- Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW)
- At least one year of continuous full-time work experience in a skilled occupation
- A minimum language proficiency score (CLB 7 in English or NCLC 7 in French)
- At least secondary school education (high school diploma or equivalent)
- Federal Skilled Trades Program (FST)
- At least two years of full-time work experience in a skilled trade

- A minimum language proficiency score (CLB 5 in speaking and listening, CLB 4 in reading and writing)
- Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

- A minimum language proficiency score (CLB 7 for NOC 0 or A jobs, CLB 5 for NOC B jobs)
Tips to Improve Your CRS Score
While having a strong CRS score is essential for being invited to apply, there are several ways to boost your score:
- Improve your language test results: A higher score on your IELTS or TEF exam can significantly increase your CRS points.
- Gain more work experience: More years of skilled work experience can help raise your CRS score.
- Apply with a spouse: If you’re married, your spouse’s qualifications (education, work experience, and language proficiency) can contribute to your overall CRS score.
- Get a job offer: A valid job offer from a Canadian employer can add valuable points to your score.
- Increase your education credentials: Earning a higher level of education or having your credentials re-evaluated can also help increase your CRS score.
